12 Volt Portable Air Conditioner Review

My experience with this unit is as follows: Purchased this unit and an Igloo cooler. Filled the ice chest approximately 3/4-full with ice. Placed in a pickup truck cab (Ford F-250 SuperDuty with SuperCab) that was pre-cooled with the air conditioner for ~30 minutes on an 80 degree day. Parked the truck in the shade and connected the unit to the aux power source in the cab. Allowed the unit 30 minutes run time. At the end of that time the temperature in the cab was equal to outside ambient conditions. There was no cooling, nor maintaining temperature inside the cab. Granted I opened the door to exit the truck, but the unit was unable to provide ANY appreciable cooling to the truck interior in 30 minutes. I've since returned the unit. I recommend you not buy this item. I can provide no insight as to why the unit worked for "Geri and Family," but potentially a very limited amount of positive feedback (1 review in this cases) can be placed by the manufacturer or proxy.

Goldstar WG8005R 8,000 BTU Room Air Conditioner, Slide-Out Chassis Review

I purchased this air conditioner for $180.00 new. I used it three times and it just stopped working. There isa circuit breaker on the end of the power supply cord of this unit. It must provide some sort of voltage drop that the unit senses. Anyway, the breaker on the cord didn't just kick, it died. Hence, the unit ceased to function at all. I contacted several part suppliers and the lowest price I found on a replacement cord was $59.00. For that amount I could almost buy a new yet smaller A.C. unit. The price is high, the quality is at the very best, POOR, the parts are outrageous if you can find them, and I will NEVER own another goldstar product. Take my advice and go for a G.E. product.

Friedrich XQ08l10A AC 8000 BTU 115V 10.8 SLIDEOUT Review

This thing really throws out the cold air. I measured the air temperature at 26 deg. coming out of the vent. Most other AC's I've had are around 38-40 deg. I really like the programmable features as I have it set to go on about an hour or 2 before I go to bed so my room is nice and cool, and it goes off in the middle of the night. The low fan speed is also very low which makes it quieter. I've noticed on a lot of other units the low speed is not that low, so you get more fan noise. Also the compressor seems relatively quiet, not sure if it's any quieter than other units, but I don't have a problem sleeping with this on, and I'm sensitive to noise when I sleep.

On the negative side, when the compressor first comes on it's a little noisier for a couple minutes then quiets down. So if it's cycling on and off very much, it can be irritating, probably not too noticeable though if it's not in a bedroom.Also the thermostat goes down to 60 deg, but it won't get the room that cold, it usually starts cycling on and off at about 67-68, but it still can get the room down to 64-65 deg.

It's a solid AC, seems like it shouldn't have the negatives I mentioned for the price of the unit, but it still throws out a lot of very cold air, so it could be worth it.

Soleus Air PH4-12R-01 Portable Air Conditioner and Heater Review

I actually got mine at Home Depot too.The model I bought was the PH4-13R-01.It has 13000 Btu cooling power and 12000 Btu heat pump.It looks identical to this one pictured at Amazon.I saved a hundred dollars by signing up for a HD credit card - so it made the decision to buy somewhat easier.

Good:

Cools well, mine is rated at 550sf, but I am actually trying to cool a much larger area.Good for a large living room or family room with kitchen adjacent.It is possible to super cool the area if necessary.

Control layout is easy to understand and change settings.

3 fan speeds, allows good control of air speed.

The heat pump is a big deal, I can't wait to try it out.Heat pumps are basically air conditioning cycle in reverse - it's supposed to be way more efficient than a typical furnace.

Bad:

Oscillation (sp?) is only up and down, not side to side.Makes air distribution poor to corners of room.

Uses lots of power, I think 1300 watts - but still better than my central air.You can save some electricity by setting the thermostat a bit higher - the compressor will turn on/off as needed to maintain that temp.

12000 Btu Ductless Split Air Conditioner Review

I recently purchased this unit and had it installed.The installation went OK but the instructions that come with the system are real vague and the English translation is a bit rough.The system is flimsy and cheaply made of plastic.When I opened the cover to the filters one of the hinges was broken.After installing, the fan on the indoor unit ran at one speed and that was very slow.I called Amcor product support and seems they have only one guy, Don, who supports the split system products.He is knowledgeable but I got the runaround and some goofy answers on my first two calls.On the third call I finally nailed him down and he said he believed it was a loose set screw on the impeller and I would have to get a technician out to take the unit apart and tighten the set screw.I was not about to pay for a technician to repair my brand new system.Unfortunately, if he had sent a new indoor unit I would have also had to pay for the re-installation.Amcor was not willing to pay for any of this.I finally talked Don into walking me through the disassembly and I tightened the set screw.Everything worked fine after this.This is more trouble than I should have to go through for a new system.I would not recommend anyone buy this brand.

SPT SF-609 Portable Evaporative Air Cooler with Ionizer Review

To be fair, the product does not claim to be an air conditioner. However, it does claim to cool 12 degrees cooler, which I didn't find at all. I live in a dry Colorado climate, and still it is barely cooler than a fan. You have to fill it with tons of ice to even get that, and it requires refilling with water and ice often. If you don't clean it at least once a week, it starts smelling really bad.

All this effort of refilling and cleaning is not worth the 3 to 5 degrees cooler you get. For that, I'd rather just plug in a fan and not have to worry about it every day. Save your money and buy a portable air conditioner. It's worth the extra investment, trust me.

I don't usually waste my time leaving comments about home appliances. But this was the biggest piece of junk I ever bought. On first run it sounded like a jet plane engine shooting over the house. Then quickly stopped. This kept on about 3 times in the first minute. I never felt any cold air coming from this unit. Also, I had a smaller Haier unit running in a different window and it produced black mold throughout the house because of poor drainage.

Stay away from Haier products because the proof is written all over the internet that they are nothing but junk. I picked up a GE air conditioner for the same price and it does a great job.

Amcor PLM12000E 12,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner Review

We bought an Amcor 12000EH unit (heat, A/C, dehumidifier and fan) back in April 2006.We were so pleased with its ability to supplement the unreliable cooling and ventilation of the administrative area of our office (4 computers, several printers, huge copier, fax machine, etc. all generating heat around the clock) that we ordered a second unit for my office.

Unfortunately, despite the fact that the description of this unit clearly indicated (and STILL does) that the heater function was included, it was NOT on the unit shipped to us by Target.Their customer service apparently could not adequately comprehend that we want the unit as described (heat, A/C, dehumidifier and fan) and, when we returned the unit, they shipped us an IDENTICAL system in a sooty, dirty box.

We canceled our order, returned BOTH units to Target and acquired an Amcor 12000EH elsewhere.

As for this 12000EH portable air conditioner with heat, dehumidifier and fan, we are VERY happy with the unit.I would not rely on it to adequately cool a very large space (its suggested for up to 400 square feet), but it is extremely well suited as a supplement for our large space where it will be 66 to 68 degrees one day and 85 degrees the next.

During a recent cooling tower malfunction that lasted for several days, the unit had to be DRAINED of collected humidity five times in a little more than 24 hours.HOWEVER, since that HVAC situation was resolved for the building, the humidity levels in here have gone back to normal ranges and we haven't had to drain the unit in the past week or so (which was our experience before the cooling tower situation arose).

We got the drop ceiling kit for these two units and both portable AC units are vented into the space above our ceiling.Alternatively, the units include a 5' vent hose and a kit for venting the unit out a nearby window.

Overall, we're VERY happy with our units.We don't pay the electric bill in our office, so I can't say what impact they have had on our energy consumption.But I can definitely give these units credit for keeping our "sealed" office (no windows which can be opened) habitable in some pretty icky conditions.

Friedrich QuietMaster Series : SL36L30A 36,000 BTU Room Air Conditioner Review

We purchased this unit because of Friedrich's reputation for quality. And I am not disappointed with the quality of this unit. It feels and looks super solid and it pushes out a MASSIVE amount of frigid air. But, the down side to that massive amount of air is that it is incredibly loud. The unit does push out enough air to keep most of our house cool, but I would think twice about installing it in a main living area. Also, it's really heavy, not something that you want to be pulling in and out of your window every year. Overall not a bad purchase, I was just not expecting it to be as loud as it is. Also for the price, I would expect a few more features like a remote control, and a remote temperature sensor.

Amcor AL10000E 10000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Electronic Controls Review

This unit will cool your place by 10 degrees within a reasonable amount of time (e.g. 30 minutes) but you will also need to empty the drain pan (for water) every hour or two/if that long/or else your carpets will be soaking wet from the drain pan that overflows. Even when you DO empty it on time, the design of the pan makes it very easy to spill water all over the place and DON'T forget the cheasy hose! Once you pull the drain pan away from the air conditioner, it continues to leak water all over the floor through that cheasy hose.

I purchased a NanoMaxA12000EH several years ago to cool a large bedroom of around 300 sqft.The equipment is advertised for up to 400 sqft.Presumably more than adquate for this application.Window units are sized at about 20 btu per sqft or in this case 6,000 btu.To be immediately noted is that it takes a lot more btu per square foot for this and other portable air conditioners to achieve the same outcome as a window unit half the size in btu.

So how did it work?Not well at all.On a hot day starting with the room in the mid 80 degree range with say 60 percent humidity it cannot cool the room down. It may drop the temperature 1 degree per hour.If we cool the room with a fan it can drop the temperature from say 78 degrees to 74 degrees in 2-3 hours.It of course provides comforting cool air if you focus on you.

A call to AMCOR support revealed that the technician thought I was definitely at or above the limit of its capacity at 300 sqft.

In use it is easy to see why it is slow.It adds considerable heat load to the room through the exhaust tube and in particular the large plastic attachment the connects the tube to the window vent.This plastic can be very hot to the touch and it is of course inside the room.The tubing is less hot however I have it as close to the window as possible (2 feet) to minimize the length the tube is played out.Presumably a long stretch of tube will also generate a lot of heat like a dryer duct.In sum, the unit is adding substantial heat load to the room severely compromising cooling efficiency.I addressed this issue by placing wet towels on the tubing and large plastic fitting.So long as they are wet they do keep it cool.

I also learned from the service rep you cannot operate the heating feature without also having the tubing installed in the window.Of course on a cold day you probably do not want an insert in your window.

Since the compressor, fans, etc. are inside the room it makes more noise than a window unit.

The filters (3) are white so it is easy to miss seeing that they should be cleaned.

On the plus side it is easy to roll around and install the vent in the window although I had to upgrade the insulation around the edge of the window insert to keep hot air that was vented circulating back into the room.I looks nice and it avoids having an unsightly window unit sticking out of a front window.

In sum, if you want cooling you are well advised to get a good window unit many of which are not that hard to insall.This unit would be best used in a room of 200 square feet or less.

SPT WA-1140DE Dual-Hose 11,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote Control Review

Its two years since I purchased this and happened upon this link today.I remember doing a great amount of research when I bought this unit.It is NOT like the one being reviewed with 2 stars.

One key point - it has two hoses - input and output (not one like many units out there).It's very good at evaporating the water it takes out of the room (the two hoses are supposedly responsible for this efficiency). I have yet to empty the tank.The unit comes with a window package that holds the tubes in place (its made of heavy duty plastic).

As to moving it around, no big problems - it is a beast to move on the stairs, but ..... its an air conditioner, not a fan.

I normally use it to cool down a 20x20 room (9 foot ceilings).It does take longer than I'd like, but if it's a humid night, it gets the room in a "sleepable" condition in about 1 hour.

The reason for not giving it 5 stars is that the remote control gives you options that you can't get from the panel. If you lose the remote, you lose the functionality (there may be a secret set of buttons you push to get the function, I haven't figure them out yet).The manufacturer's site is lacking in docs.

Amcor AL10000EH 10000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner and Heater Review

I have had 3 of these units over the past 3 years; however, I only purchased one of them.I purchased this item about 3 years ago.It worked great for about 8 months.I didn't even have to drain the water.It just worked.Then, the compressor blew out.Because it had a 5 year warranty on the compressor, I called the company, and they actually sent me out a new unit.I can definitely say that my experience with their customer service was great.So, I got the new unit a few days later, plugged it in, but the compressor on that one did not work, so they went me my third one, which was about a year ago.Today, the compressor on that one went out.

In addition, there is a very significant design flaw.When you do have to drain the water from the unit, the drain is almost on the bottom of the unit.When you unplug the hole in order to attach the drainage pipe, water leaks (floods) out of the unit.My carpet has been soaked numerous times over the past year.For anyone who does actually buy this unit, I would recommend (1) build a box about 6 inches high which is large/strong enough to place the unit on top of, (2) connect the drainage hose permanently (use duct tape if you have to, that's what I did), (3) place a bucket at the back of the unit and put the other end of the drainage hose into the bucket.This way, the unit can drain continuously and you don't have to worry about it flooding the carpet or floor when you pull out the plug when it is full.Just let it drain continually.

Over the years, we've acquired SIX of these units for our hermetically sealed offices.We have no windows that can be opened and the building temperature will vary from 63 degrees to 85 degrees from one day to the next.We're on the 5th floor and have nowhere to vent units to the outside.Yes, these units have 4" discharge hoses that need to vent away from the space being heated or cooled but we solved the problem by installing venting into the dropped ceilings and the hot air or cold air being discharged by the units goes into the space above the ceiling panels.Not a perfect solution, but it works well to make the office work space tolerable when the building HVAC system goes haywire.

I've found these units to be relatively quiet and very efficient.Because they are multi-purpose (heat, air conditioner, fan and dehumidifier), they are useful year round.We'd just be miserable without them.YES, you do have to drain the units if your space is extremely humid but it's not a huge hassle.We generally only have to do this occasionally when the building humidity level jumps unusually high.

I heartily recommend the Amcor 12,000 BTU portable air conditioners for supplemental climate control.

Friedrich 23500 BTU Window Air Conditioner (SM24M30) Review

I was very excited about getting this new model SM24M30. I was ready to spend the extra money because it is a lot of money. I got it and from the second it was installed it was defective. It could not cool down my room less than on average 78 degrees. Even at night time it would not cool the room down. It was almost the same degrees as outside. I called the store who said that I must deal with the manufacturer. I called Friedrich and they sent out a technician who agreed there was a problem but wasn't sure what it is. Friedrich still refused to exchange it. They wanted to send out a second technician who they 'trust' who just deals with their company. This person was a laughing stock. He tried to tell me that I should have to leave it on the whole day and it might cool a bit better, and a whole bunch of nonsense...He even blamed it on the oven which was on 3hrs earlier for 20 minutes in the adjoining room. In the end I was able to get Friedrich to take it back through the store and I got the older version with the same identical 24,000BTU. This one cools the whole place perfectly like it should. This just goes to prove that the other one was defective. I would go with the older model which has been around and properly tested.
I don't know what was wrong with it but Friedrich wouldn't admit anything wrong with it! It was defective. Hopefully it was just that one. I don't know. I am happy with the CP24E30. It is quiet and cools well even though it doesn't have all the fancy extra things of the new model.

DeLonghi Pinguino PACL90 Portable Air Conditioner Review

My husband and I live in a Cape Cod style home. We do have central air, but it does not do a great job cooling off the second floor, which is where our bedroom is located. After reading some reviews online about this particular air conditioner we went to Lowe's and purchased it for about $400. This is the second day we are using it and I can honestly say it is the worst air conditioner. It does not keep the room cool at all. In fact, it's warm in here right now with it running on full blast (my dog is panting). It is also extremely loud, even on its quietest setting. We are going to pack it up and return it tomorrow and purchase a window air conditioner that will hopefully do a better job at keeping us cool and comfortable in this 95 degree heat.
