I got this to supplement the window unit I've been using for years and ended up just completely replacing the window unit.
Very robotic design, it stands around 3ft tall and is in fact rather slim once you take it out of the packaging.Came with all the necessary accessories to get it running immediately. Hooking it up and putting the hot air vent where my window A/C used to be was extremely straightforward.

We usually power it up after my daughter returns from pre-school and set the temperature to around 74F.It usually shuts off at about 2am when the room and outside temps are nice and comfortable.The air is extremely cold around the unit and gets a good sized room down to a nice temp really fast.It seems very quiet during the day with all the other sounds and my daughter has slept like a baby ever since we got it.I does emit a low hum when it's cooling but otherwise the fan sound is not noticeable to me. You can turn it on high for a few minutes but after awhile, that's overkill. It does a great job on a low fan setting once the room is almost at the temp you want it at.

I really like the idea of not having to use central air like in our old apartment. I think over time the utility savings will easily cover the cost of the unit. The best part is I can bring it with us if we ever move.

It's worked excellently for a couple of weeks now and I may just end up getting another for our own room.

Frigidaire FAH106S2T Through-the-Wall 10,000 BTU Air Conditioner Review

Right on the cover of the installation manual, item #1(!) includes text and an illustration informing the owner that this unit MUST be installed with a rearward slope. Following this simple instruction will prevent any water issues. Please don't damage your A/C by drilling holes in it. I've owned a very similar model for about five years, but am happy to report that this current model (which I've installed in another room) is even better: nice controls, strong fan and cooling capability, and quiet.

Whynter ECO-FRIENDLY 12000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner Review

The kit they use to vent the hot, moist air out the window is cheap.How cheap?I followed the directions to tighten the screws and with very little force stripped out the hole before the screw was even fully tightened.The plastic that fits in the window is soft.The part that connects the hose to the window panel doesn't attach well due to the same issue with the screws so ours fell out in the middle of the night.I've seen the exact same window kit on other brands of portable air conditioners so it could be that only one company is making the window kit and selling them to the different air conditioner companies, so buying a different brand may not do you much good.

There is a work-around, tho.The enterprising few can cut a piece of wood to the right dimensions to fit their window, weather strip it around the edges, and cut a hole to vent the air from the unit - it has a fitting on the end that attaches via 4 screws.

Another work-around (which we'll probably do) is replace the screws with nuts and bolts so they can't fall out during use.

Other than that, the unit works fine.It weights around 70 lb, which isn't too heavy compared to some.We used it in a room that was larger than we should have, just to try it out and it cooled the room just fine.

Most of the moisture is evaporated and sent out the window but there is a tray that needs to be emptied sometimes. Unfortunately it is not a pull out and dump type, but has a tiny plug about an inch from the floor to drain the water from, so I guess you'll have to haul it to the shower to empty.This is also not uncommon for these types of portable air conditioners, sadly.

Frigidaire FAH146S2T Through-the-Wall 14,000 BTU Room Air Conditioner Review

First off, I want to make it clear that my low rating is not directed at Frigidaire, nor at the seller, evVive. I have another Frigidaire A/C unit that I'm very happy with, and the customer service people at evVive have so far been fantastic.

My complaint is with the Amazon.com page for this item, which leaves out an extremely important fact:This unit requires a 240-volt outlet.Most homes (in the U.S., anyway) only have 110- to 120-volt outlets.And it's not like you can get an adapter to convert to the higher voltage.To use this unit, you would need to have an electrician come to your home and install a 240-volt outlet, which obviously adds to the cost of the item.

I'm stunned that this important piece of information is not included anywhere on the page for this item.If it had been, I probably wouldn't have purchased this item at all.Now I'm faced with the hassle of uninstalling a 100-pound unit, putting it back in the original box, having it shipped back, and having to pay a restocking fee.The seller, evVive, has graciously offered to work with me on this situation, but still, this whole purchase has been more of a hassle than it needed to be.

Friedrich Compact Programmable : CP10E10 10,000 BTU Room Air Conditioner Review

Okay, here goes a somewhat long winded review. I purchased the Friedrich CP10E10 about 2 weeks ago when my old one died. A friend of mine had an older Friedrich model that worked really well and was so quiet that I knew my next air conditioner was definitely going to be a Friedrich. It just may have been a big mistake. You be the judge...

Pros
*Super cooler, can cool down my whole (small) 2 br apt
*Money Saver option- shuts down when selected temperature has been attained
*Comes with installation brackets for your windowsill that make the ac secure to the window
*Excellent service- I had to call the service center for a noise and they were able to come out right away to repair it.
*Energy efficient 10.8 EER

Cons
*Loud compressor(main cooling engine)- it sounds like an engine revving up and actually disturbs my sleep
*Installation is very extremely difficult. believe it. You must slide out the main unit from the chassis (metal sleeve) to remove a styrofoam shipping block. Then install the sleeve in the window and then slide in the main unit.
*A problem with a strange noise had me calling the service center. Why does a new unit require a visit? Apparently the fan is made cheaply and was causing a slight rustling noise. It could happen again is what they told me.
* When I called the service center they said they had been getting many calls about the noise level of this series (CP) of Friedrich air conditioners.

Servicers suggested I buy the more expensive Quietmaster unit. It's $800 or so. Ain't gonna happen. A window ac should not cost that much. Esp since I am a renter.

I think that's enough for now. I will add more on durability as time goes.

12,000 BTU Mid-Size Room Air Conditioner Review

Bought it for a room of approximately 700 square feet. Installation was straightforward and took about 1 hour. Unit is heavy so I would definitely recommend having a second person to help. It has all the basic features I was looking for (energy efficiency, remote control, 3 fan speeds, energy saving mode, etc.)
Most importantly, it cools the room quickly. Fan is somewhat noisy but tolerable. Not familiar with other brands for comparison.

Kenmore 8,000 BTU Single Room Air Conditioner Review

I bought this for my bedroom and it works excellently. I bought an air conditioner from fridgiaire that was 5,200 and it's horrible, barely even makes a room colder 2 feet in front of it. This kenmore works great, my room was hot and muggy, and i put this on, and in about 2 minutes, now i need a quilt. I recommend this to everyone, it even works great on the lowest temp and power which i will be using since it freezes me out of my room lol. I look forward to being comfortable when the weather gets stifling.

I own this air conditioner for two years.
I don't know what the other reviewer is talking about.
It is VERY loud, it not efficient at all. It's not Energy Star, it does not properly cool down my 20' x 10' room.
Very cheap construction.
I bought it just because, being a Friedrich, I thought it had to be good but this is so far from being the truth.
There are so many good items around that, next time I will definitely avoid this brand.
Shame on Friedrich.

I'm a believer in internet shopping and with the high cost of gas we're using it even more.Especially when Amazon offers free shipping and that was a big factor in making this purchase. Plus the amount of information offered about this unit made it appealing and in the end a terrific purchase.This unit is for our 1920s Arts & Crafts style brick home.The carrier who delivered alerted us in advance, let us select the day, and called the day of delivery making it very easy.The packaging was perfect - Frigidaire did a very good job.The instructions are not the best.I wish companies would bring in buyers (people who are not associated with the company or product in any way) and let them struggle with the instructions and learn to create user friendly manuals.Since our house is brick the mounting brackets weren't usable but with some creative thinking we came up with a solution to make it safe and secure.The unit is wonderful, quiet both inside and out and does a great job of cooling.Love the remote and easy to set controls.Would definitely purchase this unit again.

This unit is very quite and cools a rather large den (40 X 20) w/o overworking the unit. The unit has many functions including a money saving mode & a quite mode. I can place the unit in both money saving & quite mode and it cools the room efficiently when the outside temperture is > 90 degrees. I have had this unit for 1-year now w/o any problems.

SPT WA-7500M 7,500-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Manual Controls Review

In comparison, my 500W window AC runs cooler, but this 620W portable is so much more convenient. In my area, we need an AC only for few days a year; it was a pain to mount/unmount the window AC in summer/winter. So this one is perfect here, just plug it to the power and window and we have a good night of sleep.

It uses only 620W (300W less energy consumption than other portable ACs in this class), so we set it to the lowest temperature and let it cool continuously. The noise level is acceptable; we place it on upstairs and can barely hear it downstairs. Ran it for 24 hours and no need to drain water. In case the light says the tank is full, don't drain the water too much as the water tank is used to cool down the machine for better efficiency. I also cover the hot hose with thick cloth.

During a heat wave, we start it in the morning with all windows closed and it keeps our house to 87F while the outside is 105F. Without this AC, temperature would be 91F even at downstairs, too high to stay with and upstairs would be simply baking. 87F is OK, especially for a day or two only. After the sun goes down, we still leave it on but open all the windows. This helps hugely on a heat wave in a otherwise cool area like Oregon vally. Hard to live without it. However, I think it is useless in a hot area like Texas.

The window mounting kit was missing, called SPT and a gentaman told me it would arrive in 3-5 days. What a customer support! While I'm waiting for the kit, I simply cut a hole on a small flat box and it works like a charm.

Unless your wife is a neat freak who asks you to unmount a window AC every winter, then don't buy a portable AC. The latter is significantly less cool than the former. But if you're as lucky as me and your area is not hot enough to worth a central AC, then you'd better get this.

3M #9808 15x24 Filtrete Air Conditioner Filter Review

I knew the screen filter on my window unit was not adequate filteration for dust, etc so I decided to give Filtrete Room Filter a try.It works great! I've noticed a difference in the dust in the house. (No central air.) It has been three weeks and the filter looks pretty gross so I guess I'll be changing it fairly frequent. Also, I was able to cut one filter to fit two units: 5K BTU + 12K BTU.

Frigidaire FAH12ER2T 12,000-BTU Through-the-Wall Air Conditioner with 10,000-BTU Heat and Electronic Controls Review

I recently moved to a Co-op Complex that has Emerson in the wall units. This unit is easy to install (but very heavy), blows very cold air out and the remote is easy to use. It comes with the stuffer sealer and replacement sealer for inside the wall sleave. My living room is 12' wide and is approx. 36' long. The air circulates rather well and after having the A/C on for a little while, the temperature reader on the remote control did drop severl degrees. This was when we had a heat wave of 93 degrees or higher for several days in a row. It defiantly is powerful, I had the bathroom door closed and it was hot in there while the living room was noticably cooler than earlier. For 12,000 BTU the energy rating was not bad at 9.0 but its not an energy star model. Still, it was much better than the 20 year old A/C that it replaced. I believe the other model that was less than 12,000 BTU had an energy efficiency rating of 9.4 which my maintence guy said isn't really noticable and the new Frigidaire 12,000 BTU model is much better at energy efficiency than the old Emerson that I replaced it with. Still when I replace the other 2 Emerson A/C's I think I'll stick with Frigidaire.

This unit is great! My electric bill is not making me twist my head like from The Exorcist. I just bought its middle sibling, the 10,000 BTU unit for my bedroom and its great. My bill only slightly went up a few dollars but that was it. Last year when I had the Emersons going, the bill was constantly over $70. I got the 10,000 BTU A/C for $350 from PCR. The 12,000 BTU A/C from the same place was about $410 last year. Frigidaire and LG are the only products that we buy. (major appliances)

Frigidaire FAH14ER2T 14,000-BTU Through-the-Wall Air Conditioner with 10,600-BTU Heat and Electronic Controls Review

I bought this to replace a fully functional Frigidaire air conditioner that looks like it may have been in the wall since the house was built in the 60's.I replaced it for environmental reasons.I only hope this machine will prove to be as long-lasting.It does not cool as quickly as the old freon model but it does cool the space (about 20x15) quickly.I use my furnace ducting to move the cooled air throughout the house so it runs quite a bit in these hot days.It does occasionally have a humming sound for short periods of time that the booklet says is caused by humidity levels and they are high this year, but otherwise I can't tell it is running which is a great improvement over the old one.I would've appreciated a heads up on the three way plug that had a horizontal plugin and that it required a dedicated plug so I could've had the plug switched out before it arrived but otherwise it was just a matter of two strong guys muscling it into the sleeve that was already there, padding and insulating around the edges and plugging it in.Have only been using it about a week so I did not feel comfortable giving it 5 stars and will try to update if there are any problems.I purchased t based on reviews and the fact that the old workhorse was a frigidaire.

Have only owned it for a few weeks but so far does a great job. Four stars only because I haven't owned very long so time will tell. This unit can be used in a window or in the wall. The remote (all the options you need)works great and does an excellent job cooling the house and the noise is minimal.
Bought at a local store for $669 plus installation.Wish it came in a darker color but such is life. While shopping I found that choices for in the wall units are limited so don't expect a large selection. Fredrichs are rated all very high by CR but at twice the price so I'm hoping this will go he distance. My previous unit a GE lasted 35 years.

Midea American MWB-05CM-1 WP 5000 Air Conditioner Review

If you buy this unit, realize that it is a 5,000 BTU unit and only has enough cooling ability for small rooms. That being said, so long as you use it appropriately, it is a very good unit. The only reason I gave it 4-stars is because I have to leave the thermostat at nearly 7 (Max) to keep the room around 70-72 degrees F; if I turn it down to 6 or between 6 & 7, the room gets up to at least 75 degrees F before the compressor turns back on, which I don't want. Seems the thermostat is calibrated for a higher temperature range than I would prefer.

purchased this unit for our bedroom slider window. excellent price, easy install, cools great. much better than a portable. so if you have a slider or casement and are considering a portable- don't! they just don't cool as well.

the only detractor here is that if your window is over 40" tall you will need to use something to "plug" the remaining space. our window is 44" so i had tocut a piece of plywood to plug the gap. not too big of a deal as the window is in the back of our house on the side and we have a mini blind and curtain so you can't see the plywood inside the room. the unit fits the window snugly with no air gaps and i screwed the supplied window "plug" to the plywood and then used some canned foam sealant to fill in any invisible gaps from the outside. if your window is 40" or shorter it should fit perfectly.

EAGLE delivery service was also great. all in all i figure we saved at least $150 with amazon and the free shipping over buying locally once you figure in local CA. sales tax.

well, not even a year later and the unit is D.O.A. and this was after ONE warranty repair in October. in August the unit no longer cooled during the hottest time of the year here in Socal. we got it back from the repair center and i turned it on yesterday and it worked fine, today it is already D.O.A. again... unfortunately it is now out of warranty.

as another reviewer noted quality is the issue here. for the price i expected much more than a few months of service. when it worked it WAS great. when your unit fails do yourself a favor and since you have the window bracket in place already- just buy a $100 window unit and turn it sideways. even if it fails after a year it's better than replacing it with another $300+ hunk of trash.

LG Dual Zone Split Air Conditioner SUMMER SPECIAL Review

After much research, I bought one of these last year for a new place I needed to renovate. It's main draw was the ability to link up to three indoor units to one compressor (the quad unit is much larger).

If my home conventional central AC fails, I would get one of these. It makes a lot more sense to just turn on the place you need most cooling.

Extremely quiet, and filter is supposed to last 4 years (I doubt it will last longer than 2 years in New York thought.)

I am trying to install this air conditioner and the pictures in the installation guide are blurry. The instructions are not clear. I went to Sharp's web site to try to download any documentation but nothing. It lists this model on the support site but no documentation to download. I tried similar models and no documentation either.

My conclusion: Sharp does not care enough about the customer. Documentation is bad. Web site is worse. I would not recommend this air conditioner.

Frigidaire FRA052XT7 5,000 BTU Mini Window Air Conditioner Review

I got it hoping it would keep my apartment cool-ER. I expected it to keep it comfortable, not cold. I also had a bit of a problem with size. The only window that opens in my house is a vertical sliding window, which Air Conditioners I can afford, aren't made for.
Once I received it, I started to assemble and install. Originally I was going to leave the extensions off, since my window was only 18 inches wide, but after I got it and thought about it more, I realized they could still help keep it supported. So I put them on. They are about an inch inside the window, to help it from falling out. Also, I originally hoped to buy some wood and put that above it, but once I saw how sturdy it was with just the extensions, I put cardboard above it and plastic taped around the edges with duct tape. Very red neck, I know. It's sealed with the help of some other bits that came with it to help seal it.
I installed it a little over 12 hours ago and my home is cold. I live in a house above a garage. Just a large living room, average bathroom and small bedroom. It's 621 SQ Feet.(assuming I did the math correctly. 23 x 27 feet.) This is total, but there are 3 separate rooms here. (Also, I have a low ceiling, only 6.5 Feet.) I placed it in my only opening window in the living room and it keeps the bathroom cold which is closest, and my bedroom pretty cold too, which is farthest. A lot larger than advertised for. I didn't care, I needed a little cooler than I had. Before, it was hotter inside than it was outside. I have it on high, but will consider turning it down, which I never thought I would do. I like the cold. It's THAT cold.
For $110, I got an amazing air conditioner that perform WAY better than expected/advertised and it got here exceptionally fast too. It arrived 4 days after I ordered it with standard shipping and handling. I am a very happy costumer.

Pros:

Cons:
Upon arrival, both thumb vent control shafts were out of their sockets and outside air control would not budge.Both problems required removing the vents.
Energy saving fan mode is bizarre.It cycles the compressor in less than a minute at times, and I can't begin to understand what the fan speed algorithm is.Bottom line is that the energy mode is not practical to use and when not in energy savings mode, the fan alone draws 120-160 watts constantly!

Kenmore 5,000 BTU Single Room Air Conditioner Review

Not the quietest thing in the world, but it really cools the area very well. I have a very small 2 bedroom house.
My other 18,000 btu unit could not reach through the hallway and 2 bedrooms, it just cools the kitchen and living areas. This 5000 Btu really helps and especially if you have another fan in that room that blows it outward into hallway and your other room.

Amcor PLM14000E 14,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Electronic Controls Review

I purchased an Amcor PLM 14000E portable air conditioner based on its selling points, including being able to use it in a standard outlet, its light weight and size, and the BTU rating. The a/c unit arrived in a box that had significant wear and tear, but the unit was intact and all parts were there. It actually weighs 83 pounds (per UPS scales) vs. the 75 pounds as indicated by the manufacturer and the 58 pounds indicated in the description. The installation and setup was very easy - about 10 minutes. The weather strip provided by the manufacturer is basic and cheap. I used a better quality weather strip from Home Depot. After waiting the required 2 hours, I turned the unit on. The unit ran well for approximately 3 hours, and then the built in Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) tripped. I reset the AFCI (built into the unit's power cord) and the unit ran for about 10 minutes and the AFCI tripped again. I cannot get the unit to run for more than 10 or 15 minutes without the AFCI shutting the unit down.
I plugged the unit into a standard, 15amp household circuit. I checked the voltage at the outlet and it read OK. I also calculated the total load of all the lights and appliances in the room to see if I was drawing too many amps. If I powered on EVERYTHING that's plugged into my master bedroom circuit, including the new A/C unit, I might be pushing 15 amps. The unit indicated it took 9.5 amps and I typically only have two 75 watt lamps running at the same time the A/C unit was running. Total amps never exceed 10 or 11.

I called Amcor and they told me the AFCI tripping issues was a "known problem" (quoted directly from the service representative) and that it was due to the very sensitive nature of the built in AFCI. He went on to say I could call an electrician to inspect my home wiring (house is only 8 years old) and/or have a 20 amp dedicated circuit installed, and/or have the built in AFCI removed from the unit's powercord. He was sure to emphasize that he nor Amcor supported removing the AFCI unit. The other option the Amcor rep suggested was to return the item and request a refund - which I did.

So I'm out roughly $140 in shipping charges due to Amcor selling a portable air conditioner with a "known problem." I'm not sure it qualifies as a defect, but it certainly does not work as advertised.

Other "issues" include:

The fan is a bit noisy and does not shut off after reaching the desired temperature set on the thermostat, but the compressor does shut down. It would be better if both the fan and compressor shut off.
The remote control has a display panel that can easily get out of sync with the unit's display panel. If you change the thermostat temperature on the remote control and do not point it directly at the unit, the change will not take affect on the unit, however, the remote's display will indicate the new temperature setting. I'm not sure how useful the remote's display panel is.
